Safety and Preparedness at Workshops

Welcome back members to an exciting year with High School Hikers! Starting off with our annual Fall Hikers Workshops held this past Saturday, September 25, 1999 at Kamehameha Schools.

Approximately 90 students, teachers, hike leaders and support people came out to teach, learn and have fun!
The concentration was on safety, preparedness and the Big Island Ecology camp. We began the day with
keynote speakers Aaron Lowe of the Departmnt of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Na Ala Hele Program. Then Mr. Ken Suzuki with the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club (HTMC) who related his experience of finding the lost hikers at Kahana Valley.

Then everyone “hele on” over to their respective workshops. Brian and Buck of Camp Erdman offered their teamwork and leadership skills on Low Ropes, Scott Rowland of the University of Hawaii showed some great slides on Volcanology of the Big Island, Atomman Kim did an excellent demonstration on Backpacking gear, even with the rain the Tents workshop by Marc Morinaga went without a hitch, Jim Yuen’s Knots was very educational, First Aid by Mark Lee was fun and exciting, and John Cummings offered some cool Day Hiking gear and information. After a couple sessions lunch was served and thank you Kamehameha for the wonderful refreshments!

Paradise Pursuits, the TV high school science game modeled after the game “Jepardy”, was a fun way to meet students from other schools.

Thank you Bonnie Fujii and Alicia Rogan for doing a great job of chairing. And mahalo to Kamehameha for
the wonderful facilities and everyone who made this all happen!

So what to do with all this great knowledge? Apply it! Our next activity is the Halloween Hike and Camp
at Ho’omaluhia. See your advisors or hike leaders for details.
