OUR OCEANSOur oceans is the focus of this years High School Hikers activities. Starting with, our Fall Hikers Workshops/Conference which was held at Kamehameha Schools, Saturday September 26th. 114 students from Campbell, Castle, Farrington, Kailua, Kaimuki, Kamehameha, Leilehua, Moanalua and Waialua High Schools participated in this annual event. The day started with introductions and our keynote speaker, Aaron Lowe from the Department of Land and Natural Resources/Na Ala Hele program. Then "onward" to seek out our workshops! Some of the most interesting and fun classes were Gyotaku by Ellen Tong, Hawaii Audubon Society; Coconut Island presented by Randy Harr; Ocean Safety from Captain Ken Rust who is a lifeguard with the City and County of Honolulu; Native Coastal Habitat by Vince Mahoney of Moanalua Gardens Foundation; Hanauma Bay - Alan Hong a Park Manager at Hanauma Bay; Coral Biology from Dave Gulko, Coral Biologist with DLNR Aquatics Division; Ocean Fashions with John Cummings III and Erron Yoshioka and Limu Pressing by Kerriann Paracuelles. Before heading off to our lunch "grinds", our students were randomly mixed into "fish" teams for a "fishy relay" race. Each fish would wear one fin, and a set of goggles with snorkel and run to a small tarp to fish for stuffed animals. Unfortunately the wind got hold of our fishing lines and that put an end to that part of the relay. Everyone had fun! Thank you John Cummings. After lunch, it was time for the famous Hawai'i high school game, "Paradise Pursuits!" One thing we learned about this game is you gotta be "FAST"! as well as accurate. Some teams had an advantage over others after having won Paradise Pursuits in the past. (Right, Doc?!) Overall our adventurous hikers had a most excellent funfilled day! Hurray!
Moana ka no'eau"Broad is the knowledge of the sea" - this years Ecology Camp will be held February 13-15, 1999. This years theme reflects the message of learning about and cherishing the precious gifts of our oceans. Featuring programs and presentations, hands on learning, and other activities that will focus on our ocean environment, mans place in that environment, and the uniqueness of our island home. The highlight of the weekend will be a service project on Sunday. Contact your advisor or John Cummings for details. |
